SDG Architect in Action: How a Board Game Teaches Sustainable Development Strategies

Updated: Apr 4

The SDG Architect board game is a hands-on learning tool designed for students, educators, and professionals to explore the complexities of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Developed to simulate real-world decision-making, the game challenges players to balance economic, social, and environmental priorities while addressing interconnected challenges.

Watch this interview to learn how the Centre for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management (CIPSEM) utilizes SDG Architect in their postgraduate environmental management curriculum.

The game includes resource cards and tokens representing real-world elements like funding, infrastructure, and natural resources (e.g., forests, water). Players collaborate to advance SDGs such as poverty reduction and climate action while navigating challenges like pandemics or extreme weather events.

During gameplay, participants realize that progress in one SDG—such as reduced inequalities (Goal 10)—depends on advancements in others, like quality education (Goal 4). This sparks discussions about policy synergies and trade-offs.

SDG Architect mirrors the need for cooperation as external factors, such as partnerships and crises, directly impact a country’s ability to achieve the SDGs, creating a dynamic experience. Participants debate priorities and learn how policies in one area affect others.

SDG Architect can be played by anyone interested in learning about the interconnected nature of the Sustainable Development Goals. The game’s adaptability makes it effective in classrooms, workshops, and conferences activities. It is especially suitable for:

  • University students and educators in sustainability, environmental science, or public policy.

  • Government agencies designing SDG-aligned strategies.

  • Professionals and NGOs implementing community-level development projects.
