Africa: a glimpse into the future of the environment

MI’s T21 model provided some of the analysis that went into preparing the second African Environmental Outlook report (AEO-2).  Prepared by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) for the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN), the report profiles Africa’s environmental resources as assets for the continent’s development, and suggests how they can be harnessed to support Africa’s sustainable development.

Malawi was used as a case study to present four possible futures that may result from different policy choices at the regional and sub-regional levels.  MI had developed a custom T21 model for the Government of Malawi in 1999. The existing Malawi model was further developed to enhance its environmental modeling capability and enable it make projections through year 2025.

The AEO report will be the main tool for environmental policy and advocacy by AMCEN to promote the sustainable development agenda in Africa in the context of the MDGs, and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD)’s Environmental Initiative, amongst others.
